Here's how I see it.

Yes, rapidshare has a constant speed and "won't" give up... HOWEVER, there are three huge problems.

1. If you have a connection that slips in and out, it WILL fail, FORCING you to start from the beginning. This happened to me repeatedly until I had my modem replaced. I think, in all, I finished about 2-3 of the countless downloads that I tried.

2. If your ISP lumps a whole bunch of users together under one single IP address, the site will always think you've already consumed your daily download limit. Again, this was with my old modem. I don't know what's different about my new one, I'm pretty sure it still lumps users together... but maybe it does it more intelligently. I think, in all, I was able to start about 10 of the countless downloads that I tried. Recall how many finished successfully.

3. The limit. Due the the big stuff (or maybe it applies to everything), I can only download ONE thing every 3.5 hours... now... in the case of that 27 part site rip that I was getting recently... that would've taken a minimum of 9 days if I was actually keeping up with my 3 per day average. In the end it took me about 2 full weeks.

I'll be damned if I'm going to pay good money so that I can illegally download shit that I want for free. Money's money. I don't care if it's the artist/manufacturer/developer/producer/company or rapidshare, I'm not paying anyone.




Torrents on the other hand... well, depending on something's popularity, and to a lesser extent its size, the speed can be considered pretty constant.

I've been downloading a bunch of full TV serieses this week (started on Sunday, each was roughly 2-4GB), shows which I had assumed would be rare and unseeded, and four of the five are already done. Two of them finished on the same day that I started them. Each one had at least 4 100% seeders on 24/7. When you get stuff like that, it's clear sailing.

Then you get the torrents that are well over 10 gigs... now, maybe it's me, but I expect those things to take up to a month. Those kinds of torrents aren't the kind that you want RIGHT now. No. You start them and just ignore them, and in time you'll get that wonderful little "_________ is finished downloading" message.

Whereas with rapidshare, I always find myself wanting it NOW!

But let's look at something.

For us non-payers... a 40 gig torrent, of which I've had at least two, will take roughly a month minimum on bittorrent. That's 30 days, 30 days of not having to do anything. But if we converted that to rapidshare what would it look like?

Well... 40GB torrent / 100MB max per piece = 400 pieces... / 3 per day = 133 days, 133 days of actively clicking and typing in that stupid CAPTCHA.

Torrents are better.



But nooo, you say. What about small torrents?

Well, let's take torrents that are 100MB or less. Albums or single episodes in medium to quality or resolution (depending on filetype). They download in 10 minutes... and you can have like... 20 of them going at the same time. Something a non-paying rapidshare user CAN'T do.

Torrents are better.



And finally you say... but nooooo, torrents die.

Well... rapidshare deletes shit. Same difference.

Neither gets any points here. Torrents still come out on top.



Also, from what I've heard, there is no reliable rapidshare search engine, and if any appear, they get shutdown or something else happens to them. Unless someone personally uploads something and tells you to check it out, or they or you are lucky enough to find it on a message board or blog somewhere... you're never going to find it. Torrents on the other hand... if it exists, you can find it.

Torrents are better, and looking at the evidence, they win.



If I'm given the option of downloading something, anything, on either rapidshare or bittorrent, the link(s) for the rapidshare being provided to me and the torrent(s) I find still being alive (no matter what condition)... I'm still going with the torrent.

Again, it's you wanting Rapidshare to move 5239580295 times faster than torrents. Last I checked 2 weeks was less than a month.
